David's Accomplishments while in Prison
While in prison, David managed to help his neighbors behind bars, as well as reaching out beyond to the free world. Here are some of the accomplishments David has achieved during his years of incarceration:- A beloved mentor to university students – helping them to shape what would become distinguished careers in law, arts, science
- Helped numerous illiterate inmates learn to read and write
- Litigation researcher and advocate working to urge Texas legislators to match Supreme Court rulings regarding standards of retardation for offenders condemned to death
- An expert guest speaker at international criminal justice symposiums, speaking through the auspices of the Pan American Society
- Expert guest speaker as part of the criminal justice program at St Edward’s University in Austin Texas
- Helped create programs of literacy and art history for undereducated inmates
- Tutored undereducated inmates in the areas of law, in order to help them take ownership of their own cases
- Voter registration and political education on a local level
- Community organizer
- Grief counseling to family members of murder victims
- Recipient of the Brothers Keeper Award by Capacity For Justice
